In his essay, Instructions for the Cook, Zen Master Dogen encourages us to use all the ingredients of our life. Koshin Paley Elliso explores Zen Master Dogen's discussion with a cook eight hundred years ago in China and how it is both relevant and encouraging for practicing here in New York City. How do we use the ingredients in our life right where we are? How do we cultivate a mind where nothing is hidden?

Koshin Paley Ellison, MFA, LMSW, is the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the New York Zen Center for Contemplative Care (www.zencare.org). He serves as the Director of Training for the Center’s Buddhist Contemplative Care Programs. Koshin is an Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Buddhist Studies. Koshin began Zen practice over twenty years ago, and he is a Senior Soto Zen Buddhist Priest, Osho.
