"Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

-- Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Join us on September 11th, 2011 as we commemorate the 9/11 tragedy with a free public meditation event, held in the spirit of love and healing.  People of all faiths are invited to join members of The Interdependence Project, the Shambhala Center, the Jewish Meditation Center of Brooklyn, The Village Zendo, Won Buddhism of Manhattan, Buddhist Peace Fellowship, and other NYC meditation and spiritual communities.  Some of New York’s leading meditation teachers, including Acharya Judy Leif, Shastri Ethan Nichtern and Alison Laichter, will provide guided instruction throughout the day.

Together, we will open our hearts to all people affected by this tragedy, and wish for the well-being of all who have brought compassion and peace to our city over the past decade.  To support this intention, we will practice a Loving-kindness (Mettā) contemplation that generates love within one's self and gradually extends it outwards to others.

This free event will take place from 11am-4pm on Sunday, September 11th 2011 at the Parade Grounds on Governor’s Island – an open outdoor space with a view of lower Manhattan, and a 15 minute ferry ride from downtown.

** Note, due a forecast of thunderstorms, the event will now be taking place at the NY Shambhala Center.  (Directions below!) Participants may arrive and leave at any point during the event, but an RSVP to joshua@theidproject.org is recommended so that we can plan appropriately.

Note: We will be serving some light refreshments throughout the day, but participants are encouraged to bring a lunch.

To RSVP for this event or if you’d like to volunteer or help out organizing, please e-mail joshua@theidproject.org

Hmmmm

I think the key themes boil down to how we talk to ourselves, how we respond to things, how we make meaning, who we spend time with, and how we make the most of what we’ve got. The other key thing is that happiness is dynamic and it’s not a static state. It’s about living, learning and growing, and rolling with the punches. I also think it’s important to think of happiness as a skill. Drive from happiness. For durable happiness, lead your happiness from the inside out.

Meditation

With the hectic pace and demands of modern life, many people feel stressed and over-worked. It often feels like there is just not enough time in the day to get everything done. Our stress and tiredness make us unhappy, impatient and frustrated. It can even affect our health. We are often so busy we feel there is no time to stop and meditate! But meditation actually gives you more time by making your mind calmer and more focused.Frank M. Shoemake
