GUEST LECTURE - The Alexander Technique

with Elizabeth Reid
Mon, 02/15/2010 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm

The Alexander Technique is a subtle and profound technique that brings mindfulness of body to the forefront. With the tools of only body, speech and mind, the student is guided toward directed thinking and a non-doing approach, learning to recognize and transform habitual patterns of body that interfere with the innate vibrancy of the "basically good" body. Along with the transmission of a gentle non-doing touch from the teacher, the student is able to tune in to her own easeful system, connecting to the parasympathetic nervous system rather than the reactive "flight or flight" response so prevalent in our activity.

New pathways are created in the system, bringing new meaning to the words "just being"; a powerful sense of synchronization that primes the meditator to receive the full benefits of practice. With discipline and willingness to allow the unfamiliar (known territory for the meditator!), windhorse is restored; an awake and energized system arises.

Elizabeth Reid is a senior teacher in the Shambhala Meditation Center of New York. There she spent 2 years on the teaching faculty of the Tuesday night Dharma Gathering and has led contemplative photography workshops for the past several years. With a background in dance, theater and Iyengar Yoga, she has always been intrigued by the interplay between meditation and the arts.

Elizabeth is a Nationally Certified Teacher of the Alexander Technique and has a private practice in Manhattan.
