Metta, or Lovingkindness Meditation (LKM), is the practice of wishing oneself and others happiness, health, and ease. Based on traditional Buddhist teachings, it has become an increasingly popular practice, as it generates both concentration and a deep understanding of the nature of our connection to ourselves and others. Cultivating compassion and patience towards our experience enables us to build equanimity and courage through the constant and inevitable changing circumstances of life.

This workshop, presented by the Center for Anti-Violence Education (CAE), is designed to help New Yorkers facing hate and violence defend themselves, and empower bystanders with the tools they need to help those facing harassment.

The program involves building mind/body awareness, awareness of gender and race issues when intervening, how to report hate incidents, and how individuals can become involved in a movement to end systemic hate and violence.

Our Engaged Practice Group supports activists and all those committed to a compassionate and just world.  We meet regularly to discuss our individual efforts, our collective endeavors, and share our experiences.  Meetings are led by friend and IDPeep Matt Jones, Board Director Tarikh Korula, and Teacher Jackie Stewart.  We'll be considering the many ways we can get involved and support our values, and also share our experiences with each other.   This evening will include guided meditation.

After our successful discussion in March, we have invited guest teacher Joe Weston back to continue the exploration of his work and take us deeper into the practices with some meditative and interactive exercises, as well as discuss further the importance of clarifying our authentic power, respectful assertiveness and collaborative engagement at this time in our history. This 90-minute session is ideal for those who attended the last discussion, as well as for those new to the philosophy and practices of Respectful Confrontation.
